S.M.A.R.T. goals charts and explanations abound.

Everyone encourages you to set goals; but to tell the truth I struggled with the S.M.A.R.T. Goal setting charts. I also struggled with setting goals. Is it any wonder my business struggled?

My main problem was wstrugglingith setting goals themselves. I needed to come to grips with recognizing that I was responsible to take action for my benefit. I had to figure out that it was okay to work for my good and well being. I had some pretty convoluted thinking going on. That is why it is critical to plug into personal development opportunities.

At least a couple times a year I sat in a workshop that encouraged goal setting and often some form of the S.M.A.R.T. chart was introduced.

I wanted things to change, so goal setting made sense; but the instructions with most S.M.A.R.T. charts used words that were redundant.

For instance, Specific and Measurable seem about the same to me. Similarly, Attainable and Realistic overlap ideas.

Still, I believe that goal setting is necessary.

I wasn’t successful in goal setting until I had a coach guide me through the process and give me helpful feedback.

Today my goals motivate and inspire me to work towards what I want and need. I can see measurable differences in my behavior. I have chosen a path that keeps me busy doing what I enjoy.enjoying

Do what you enjoy and you will never work a day in your life.  – Confucius

I enjoy my life now that I have goals and am working towards them.

I want that for you.

Here is my version of the S.M.A.R.T. goal setting idea. If my definitions don’t work for you, Google S.M.A.R.T. and choose from one of the many online. The important thing is to set goals and work towards them.

S.M.A.R.T. Goals for 2017

 Stretching

Your goals should be hard enough that you will be stretched out of your comfort zone. If you don’t stretch yourself, you may find yourself at the end of 2017 right where you are today.

Measurable

You should be able to know exactly when you have achieved your goals. It is hard to know just when you are rich; but you know exactly when you have $1,000,000 in the bank.

Attainable

Although your goals should stretch you, they must be goals that you can realistically reach. Setting a goal of earning $5,000 a month at the end of your specified time frame is more doable than having $1,000,000 in the bank, unless you are already earning $5,000 a month.

Rewarding

Your goals should be highly desirable to you. If you aren’t driven by money in the bank, then don’t make that your goal. Center the goal around what is most important to you. If your desire is to fire your boss and stay home with your kids, then make your goal the average monthly earnings you need to do that.

Time-Bound

You need a deadline. Make it realistic. Then work towards it and celebrate even if you fall short. You have at least moved forward.

Above all else, set goals.

Goals don’t have to be perfect. Goals give us direction.

Get ready for 2017 by setting goals.

Then find an accountability partner, mastermind group or coach to keep you on track with your goals.

God bless you in 2017.
