What I Learned About Attraction Marketing in Los Cabos

Cabo-CantinaBefore I had barely cleared customs at the airport at San Jose Del Cabo, I was greeted by enterprising Mexican citizens looking to exchange their services for my dollars.

I quickly realized that I needed to smile, not make eye contact and stick close to the group I was with. I felt woefully inadequate to navigate the multitude of intense sellers in these my first moments in Mexico.

It was marketing on it’s most primitive level. I wasn’t moved to respond but perhaps it was effective because there were dozens of people prompting me to let them provide me with transportation to my hotel. It must have influenced others.

Before my vacation was ended I observed several other marketing techniques. Some were more subtle than others.

Some I recognized easily because I had been guilty of using them.

I saw an opportunity to grow; so I started observing, analyzing and learning.

I was critical of the airport transportation hawkers and certain street vendors – at first.

Then I started planning this blog; in the beginning I was ready to discount the hard selling techniques and endorse the soft selling, relationship methods. But now I am not so sure.

People love to shop. They don’t want to be sold to.

The vendors who built relationships with customers and offered value definitely appealed to me.

But if those are better, more effective methods, why would so many people continue to use the other methods.

Maybe they are just as effective.

Maybe it depends on the selling situation and the personality of the seller and the personality of the buyer.

The same question can be asked of old school and new school network marketing techniques.

I tried old school for years and was barely successful. I know they worked for me because the work I did using those techniques is still earning me monthly residual income. But I never felt good about those methods.

Some of my colleagues still use old school and probably believe that is the only way to build a business. I respect them and what they have achieved.

However, I now know that old school isn’t the only way to build a network marketing business.

The vendors I observed in Mexico who used a technique that involved building relationships with customers and offering value were more effective for me and the group I was with.

In network marketing, building a relationship before sharing the products and business opportunity may take longer but in the long term may be more effective.

I have arrived at the conclusion that people new to network marketing need to be aware that the profession is changing rapidly and radically. Currently, old school and new school both work. That may not be true for much longer.
