Why Should God Bless You?

rainbow-in-field_z1OiDvOODo you ever ask that question? Read about this prayer and affirmation from Psalm 67 to learn why you should ask God to bless you.

Do you believe that God wants to bless you?

Do you feel selfish asking for God’s blessing?

When I struggle with this kind of faulty thinking it helps me to remember that God is a parent. We rightly call Him Father; but there are a few places where God is given motherly attributes as well.

Hosea 13:8 (NIV)

Like a bear robbed of her cubs,
    I will attack them and rip them open;

Deuteronomy 32:18 (NIV)

18 You deserted the Rock, who fathered you;
    you forgot the God who gave you birth.

Isaiah 66:13 (NIV)

13 As a mother comforts her child,
    so will I comfort you;
    and you will be comforted over Jerusalem.”

Matthew 23:37 (NIV)

37 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing.

Human parents are lacking in God’s perfection; still they can relate to the desire to see their children being blessed.

Your human father or mother may not always have your best interests in mind.

But your Heavenly Father/Mother has every bit of your best interests in mind and on His Heart.

God wants to see you succeed (be blessed) because He loves you.

If God had a refrigerator, your picture would be on it. If He had a wallet, your picture would be in it. He sends you flowers every spring and a sunrise every morning. Face it friend, He

God wants the best for you; so you can expect that He would like to bless you in every way.

Do you want the best for God?

Do you want Him to be blessed in every way?

Read this psalm.

Psalm 67

For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A psalm. A song.

May God be gracious to us and bless us
    and make his face shine on us—
so that your ways may be known on earth,
    your salvation among all nations.

May the peoples praise you, God;
    may all the peoples praise you.
May the nations be glad and sing for joy,
    for you rule the peoples with equity
    and guide the nations of the earth.
May the peoples praise you, God;
    may all the peoples praise you.

The land yields its harvest;
    God, our God, blesses us.
May God bless us still,
    so that all the ends of the earth will fear him.

 The idea of this Psalm is simple.

God blesses you; God is blessed.

Think about it. A parent or grandparent or aunt or uncle see a item in the store. They know a child they love will like it.

A doll. A truck. A game. An electronic device.

Whatever it is. When they see it, they think of Sophia or Jackson. A smile spreads across their face as they think about giving the gift.

You must learn to believe that is how God thinks.

And don’t make the mistake of thinking that God only smiles at giving you socks and books and other “practical” gifts.

God took me shopping once. (1)When I was director of a nonprofit ministry, I was single minded in my focus. I loved the ministry and I loved what I was doing; but I was working myself serious (as opposed to silly). I had forgotten how to relax and enjoy myself. I had forgotten the importance of that.

One morning I went to a prayer breakfast. The devotional was about tea. The woman who wrote it had British roots and it began with a description of the proper way to make and serve tea.

Then the devotional explained that for a tea pot to function it has to be filled before it can empty out itself. As it empties itself, it must be refilled.

I realized that was me. I was emptying myself everyday without being filled. I realized that I needed to take a day off to fill myself.

I got permission from my staff to take the day off. I knew of a gathering of business people at noontime. It was a time of prayer that took place for an hour. Musicians came and played and people came and went as their lunch schedules allowed.

With the exception of the music, it was a time of quiet that set the scene for incredible prayer.

It was two hours away! But I put praise music on in my car and headed towards a time of prayer.

One hour later, I was already feeling filled by the praise and prayer in my car. I thought to myself, I don’t really need to continue. I have been filled. I could head home.

But I didn’t. I had set my course and was determined to finish it.

Except, I couldn’t. An hour later, I arrived at the hosting ministry to learn that the prayer hour was canceled that day due to a meeting of pastors.

I was a little confused. I had believed that this trip was designed by God for my well being. I believed that God saw my need for this time of prayer. I also believed that God knew, when He prompted me to take this trip, that the meeting would prevent my time of prayer.

Why would God have me drive two hours for a prayer time He knew was canceled?

Still wondering about God’s plan, I decided to visit my favorite thrift shop which was just a few blocks away.

I liked this particular thrift shop because clothing was so well organized. It was possible to find items that appealed to my taste and fit my body without checking every piece on the racks.

So I went to the thrift shop before heading home.

A hour or so later, as I pushed the half full cart. I pondered the puzzle of my thwarted prayer time trip. I was really enjoying the shopping; I had found some nice additions to my wardrobe.

I was enjoying how it turned out. But why would God take me on a wasted two hour trip. Then a new understanding flooded my thoughts.

God had taken me shopping!

I needed time alone in prayer; it is true. And I got way more than an hour as I drove.

But God knows that we need fun time.

God knows that as important as prayer and time in the Bible is; we also need to have less serious pursuits.

God wanted to bless me with His best.

He gave me four hours of driving time to listen to praise music and pray.

And he gave an hour or so of shopping.

When I returned home that evening, I was a full teapot. I was ready to be emptied once again.

What does God see that you need today- (1)

You can be sure that He cares about you in the same way He does about me.

Sometimes you will know what you need; often you will not.

Just ask God to bless you and wait to see where he takes you.

Prayer

Father God, be gracious to me and bless me; make Your face shine upon me, so that Your ways will be known here on earth.
May people praise You, Father, for what You do for me. Bless me so that all of the earth will fear and worship You. In Jesus name, Amen.

 Affirmation

God is gracious to me and blesses me; He looks on me with joyful favor.

And God is blessed as He blesses me. All the world sees what God does for me and they praise God. His salvation is made known to people who need to see how God works for me and they want that for themselves.

God makes all people blessed as He blesses me. Farmers and business people prosper because God blesses me. As a result, the whole world worships God.

God bless you,
